PostSubject: Chatter Rules   Fri Mar 21, 2014 11:12 am

Please read this post in its entirety and, if necessary, bookmark it, because it will be assumed that anyone posting in Chatter is aware of its contents. It will also be assumed that members are fully aware of the board’s Guidelines, Rules, & Terms of Use.

The Richard III Network (R3N) is a resource for people interested in Richard III, his life and times. The Chatter sub-forum is an added bonus to R3N. Please remember that membership on this board is a privilege rather than a right, and bear that in mind when posting.

Chatter was introduced by the Owner to be an area where we can discuss things not directly related to historical Richard III because, quite simply, there is more to our lives (and his).

Chatter also gives us the unique opportunity to get to know each other and to find shared interests outside of Richard III (although please be careful about how much personal information you disclose).

We encourage a lively sense of humor in Chatter, but please be aware that humor varies greatly around the world. What may be funny and acceptable in your society may be deeply hurtful to others. This applies equally to members reading and posting. If you’re posting, have a think before you press the post button. If you’re reading and feel offended, have a think before you react to what someone else has said and post that reaction to the board.

The following rules are presented so it’s clear to all posters what topics are acceptable in Chatter, and what are not.

1. No overtly (current) political or religious threads. What may start as an innocuous thread can soon escalate into open conflict. Swift action will be taken by the moderators against those who start such threads, as well as those who are deemed to escalate tensions therein. Not everyone will share your views: beliefs, cultures and perceptions differ around the world, and what you take as the opinion of your immediate group may not be in agreement with others who have an equal right to express their views. There is no more fertile ground for dissent than politics, religion or race. Tread very softly in these matters if you choose to address them at all.

2. No personal attacks against individuals or groups. This is a gentle environment for people who enjoy talking about Richard III and his life and times. The moderators do not tolerate attacks against any member of the R3N or against those who are not here to defend themselves.

3. No trolling or flaming. From Wikipedia – "An Internet troll, or simply troll in Internet slang, is someone who posts controversial, inflammatory, irrelevant or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum or chat room, with the intention of provoking other users into an emotional response or to generally disrupt normal on-topic discussion."

Further..."Flaming is a hostile and insulting interaction between Internet users. Flaming usually occurs in the social context of a discussion board, Internet Relay Chat (IRC) or even through e-mail. An Internet user typically generates a flame response to other posts or users posting on a site, and such a response is usually not constructive, does not clarify a discussion, and does not persuade others. Sometimes, flamers attempt to assert their authority, or establish a position of superiority over other users. Other times, a flamer is simply an individual who believes he or she carries the only valid opinion. This leads him or her to personally attack those who disagree. In some cases, flamers wish to upset and offend other members of the forum, in which case they can be called "trolls". Most often however, flames are angry or insulting messages transmitted by people who have strong feelings about a subject."

There need be no further explanation of this other than to state that such behavior will not be tolerated. When trolling or flaming occurs, moderators may issues one warning and then prevent the offender(s) from posting for a specific length of time. If the offender(s) persist, they will be banned from membership on R3N.

4. No R3N member may harass, bully, abuse, attack or stalk any other forum member through personal messages, email, or any other medium. If you feel that another R3N member is behaving this way toward you, be sure to keep complete copies of all emails and/or other communication with the member and notify a moderator immediately. Any forum member found to be harassing, attacking, or stalking another member in any capacity will be summarily and permanently banned from R3N. Laws exist in many countries to prosecute this sort of behavior. Local law enforcement may therefore be consulted. Bottom line: be nice to everyone on R3N.

5. No profanity or posting of adult-themed images or links. This board is accessible by minors and people whose sensitivities may be very different from yours. Please note that profanity includes the substitution of characters for certain letters of offensive words. Use plain and simple language to get your view across and remember that the insertion of an emoticon or smiley does not give you any excuse to post in an aggressive or profane manner. Imagine that you are reading the post with a young child also reading the screen and looking at the images; how would you explain what is there? More importantly, why should you be in a position where you have to?

6. No abuse of other people’s bandwidth or copyright. Respect the bandwidth of other users and sites. The use of inline (IMG) image tags pointing to data stored on third party systems for which the user has not received permission to link to may be removed. This also applies to the posting of copyrighted works or images. Any quoted text or images should be correctly attributed, linked back to the site they came from if applicable. The images should be reduced in size to a maximum of 800 pixels wide by 800 pixels high. Contact a moderator if you need guidance on how to resize an image before you post it.

7. Please proofread and spellcheck your posts. Proofread what you are about to post, as it will likely have a much bigger audience than you had considered possible, and it will also be around for a long time. Correct spelling and punctuation are a matter of common courtesy. Post in a way which is consistent with standard English (British or American). Please do not use webspeak or textspeak. Please do not use an excessive number of emoticons nor very large or garishly colored text, etc. Also, please do not overuse capitals (which comes across as SHOUTING) or use excessive punctuation (e.g. ! and ?) in topic titles or posts.

8. If you find a post that breaks these rules (including spam posts), please do not respond to it. Notify a moderator about it. Do not expect instant action, for the moderators are all volunteers who have lives beyond the R3N. They also live in multiple countries with multiple time-zones. Be patient, every reported post will be given attention. There may also be instances where the moderators will need to discuss a particular course of action between themselves. Our team of moderators is drawn from a diverse range of backgrounds. We make every effort to moderate in an unbiased fashion, and we will not enter into any discussions with forum members to debate this. The determination of what is construed as indecent, vulgar, spam, etc. as noted in these rules is up to the moderators.

9. No public complaints or discussions about administrative actions taken. When a forum member has violated the guidelines and the moderators have taken punitive action, there is to be no public discussions regarding that action. Doing so will invite further punitive action, usually consisting of members being banned from R3N.

10. Above all else please remember that the moderator and owner of this list reserves the right to remove posts, to take steps to suspend or ban or terminate any member’s access to The Richard III Network, in whole or in part, without forewarning or public discussion and for any reason, at their sole discretion to preserve the character and harmony of the site.

Thank you for your understanding and ongoing kindness to your fellow forum members.
