Caxton's Translation of Llull's Book of the Order of Chivalry Empty
PostSubject: Caxton's Translation of Llull's Book of the Order of Chivalry   Caxton's Translation of Llull's Book of the Order of Chivalry EmptySun 18 May 2014, 17:37

In 1484, Caxton published an English translation of Ramon Llull's late 13th-century French creation, The Book of the Order of Chivalry or Knighthood. In his dedication of the work to Richard, Caxton wrote:

And thus I present this little Book to my most feared and dread natural sovereign lord, King Richard, King of England and of France, so that he may command this Book be owned and read by all the young gentlemen and Knights within this realm. The noble Order of Chivalry will then be better practiced and honored than it has been in recent times. By doing this, he will be doing a noble and virtuous deed; I shall pray almighty God for his long life and prosperity and that he may have victory -.over all of his enemies and that after this short and transitory life he will obtain everlasting life in heaven, where there is joy and bliss, world without end.
Amen.

You can find a bit more about Caxton's translation of Lull's book (the extra l in your source appears to be a typo) at this link where you can also download a translation of Caxton's version into modern English: http://www.academia.edu/2358921/The_Book_of_the_Order_of_Chivalry_by_Ramon_Lulls Apparently, the original language was Catalan, so Caxton was translating (and adding to) a translation. His dedication to King Richard, oddly from our perspective, appears at the end rather than the beginning of the book.
