| No, this isn't about a mistress of Richard's, it's about Jane Shore. After reading this review by 'The Paperback Princess,' I want to read the book. Review of "Royal Mistress" here | |

Thanks for the link. It strikes me as odd that Anne Easter Smith, who I think is a member of the American branch of the Richard III Society since she posts to that forum, would choose to call Elizabeth Lambert "Jane Shore." As I'm sure you know, Elizabeth was known in the fifteenth and early sixteenth century as "Shore's wife" or "Mistress Shore." I think it was a sixteenth-century poet who gave her the first name Jane because he didn't know her real first name. I suppose the author has used that unhistorical name because it's more familiar to readers than Elizabeth Lambert. (I like the way Sharon Kay Penman wriggled out of that dilemma by having Jane be Elizabeth's middle name and Edward choosing to call her that because he already had three Elizabeths in his life.) Anyway, let us know what you think of the book and whether you recommend it.

Anyway, let us know what you think of the book and whether you recommend it. So Lambert was actually her maiden name and Shore was her married name? Did she revert to her maiden name once she got a divorce? It will be awhile before I can get to this book. Am buried writing one.

It will be awhile before I can get to this book. Am buried writing one. Yes and no. Yes, Lambert was her maiden name and Shore was her married name (her husband was William Shore), but, no, she never reverted to her maiden name as far as I know. But historians and genealogists use her maiden name just as we generally use Elizabeth Woodville rather than Dame Elizabeth Grey or (Lady) Eleanor Talbot rather than (Lady) Eleanor Butler. I think you mentioned your own book in another thread. Can you link back to that discussion to talk about it?

I haven't mentioned it anywhere. My writing partner and I are writing a fantasy novel wherein Richard survives Bosworth. I don't want to go into detail because if I do, I won't want to actually write the story. We have three outlines behind this one for entirely different novels featuring him as well. I need to write faster.
